Before commissioning

The main button is white and other buttons are off

The VS storage device is in waiting mode.

All buttons are unlit

The VS storage device is in sleep mode.

Possibility 1:
If you have connected the VS storage device to the host system, check that the USB ports of the VS storage device and the host system are firmly connected.

Possibility 2:If you have pressed the main button for more than 3 seconds and the VS storage device is still in sleep mode, the VS storage device must be charged. To do this, connect it to a host system or a charger via a USB cable.

All buttons are unlit after pressing the main button

The VS storage device must be charged. To do this, connect the VS storage device to a host system or a power socket using a USB cable.

After pressing the main button, the main button flashes red and the other buttons are off

Check that a valid smartcard has been inserted and that the orientation is correct. The smartcard must be inserted with the contacts facing upwards.

Insert smartcard

The main button flashes red while all other buttons are off

Possibility 1:
There is no smartcard in the VS storage device.

Possibility 2:
An unknown smartcard is inserted correctly, but it is not recognised as a smartcard.

Possibility 3:
A smartcard is inserted the wrong way round (there is no contact with the card reader) or there is no chip.

The main button flashes amber while all other buttons are off

A smartcard is inserted correctly, but it is unknown to the storage device. No login is possible. When you press the main button and button 1, the main button lights up blue.

The main button glows white while all other buttons are off

A smartcard is correctly inserted and known to the VS storage device (even if SO and / or user PIN are locked or the smartcard table has been deleted).

The main button flashes green while all other buttons are active

A smartcard is correctly inserted and known for the VS storage device. It is entered in the smartcard table. Further steps are possible. For example, you can log in with the User-PIN.

Button functions

The main button flashes orange once and then lights up white while all other buttons are off

You have pressed the X button (Cancel). The VS storage device is now in waiting mode.

User authentication: Press main key + 1 + ✓.

The main button flashes green and all other buttons light up white. The User-PIN can be entered to unlock access to the data.

Activation or deactivation of the write protection: Press main key + 2

Possibility 1:
If write protection is switched off, the main button lights up green while all other buttons are off. Press "X" if you want this state to remain or "✓" if you want to activate the write protection. After pressing the "✓" key: The main button now flashes green and all other keys are active. Enter the user PIN to activate write protection. The main button now lights up purple while all other buttons are hidden. The write protection is activated.

Possibility 2:
If write protection is on, the main button is lit purple while all other buttons are off. Press "X" if you want this state to remain or "✓" if you want to activate write protection. After pressing the "✓" key: The main button now flashes green and all other keys are active. Enter the user PIN to deactivate the write protection. The main button now lights up green while all other buttons are hidden. The write protection is deactivated.

Possible error:
The main key flashes red after entering the current User PIN: The current User PIN was entered incorrectly. The VS storage device switches to waiting mode.

Change User-PIN: press main button + 3 + ✓

The main button flashes green while all other buttons light up white. Enter the current user PIN and confirm with "√". Enter the new User PIN and confirm with "√". Repeat the new User PIN and confirm with "√". The VS storage device switches to waiting mode after the User PIN has been changed successfully.

Possible error:
The main key flashes red after entering the current user PIN: The current User PIN was entered incorrectly. The VS storage device switches to waiting mode.

Possible error:
The main key flashes red after the new User PIN has been repeated: The new User PIN was repeated incorrectly. The VS storage device switches to waiting mode.

Changing the User-PIN with the SO-PIN: press the main button + 4 + ✓

The main button flashes light blue while all other buttons light up white. Enter the current SO PIN and confirm with "√". Enter the new user PIN and confirm with "√". Repeat the new user PIN and confirm with "√". The VS storage device switches to waiting mode after the user PIN has been changed successfully.

Possible error:
The main key flashes red after entering the current SO PIN: The current SO PIN was entered incorrectly. The VS storage device switches to waiting mode.

Possible Error:
The main key flashes red after the new user PIN has been repeated: The new user PIN was repeated incorrectly. The VS storage device switches to waiting mode.

Change SO-PIN: press main button + 5 + ✓

The main button flashes light blue while all other buttons light up white. Enter the current SO PIN and confirm with "√". Enter the new SO PIN and confirm with "√". Repeat the new SO-PIN and confirm with "√". The VS storage device switches to waiting mode after the SO-PIN has been changed successfully.

Possible error:
The current SO PIN was entered incorrectly: The main button flashes red after the current SO- has been entered incorrectly (corresponding to the number of incorrect attempts). Possible error: If the main button flashes yellow-red-yellow-red and then lights up white, this SO-PIN is already locked.

Possible error:
The main key flashes red after the new SO PIN has been repeated: The new SO PIN was repeated incorrectly. The VS storage device switches to waiting mode.

Activation or deactivation of lockout mode: press main button + 6 + ✓

The main button flashes purple and all other buttons are active. Enter the Admin PIN to activate or deactivate the lockout mode. The main button flashes green once and then lights up white while all other buttons are hidden. The lockout mode is successfully switched and the VS storage device switches to waiting mode.

Possible error:
The main button lights up blue while all other buttons light up white: There is no reaction. Activating and deactivating the lock-out mode is not possible without connecting to the host system.

Main button flashes red after entering the Admin PIN and then lights up white permanently:
The Admin PIN was entered incorrectly. The main button flashes red depending on the number of incorrect attempts. The VS storage device then switches to waiting mode.

Creating a new DEK: press main key + 7

The main button lights up red while all other buttons are active. Press "✓". The main button flashes green and all other buttons light up white. Enter the user PIN and confirm with "✓".

If the main button lights up green, then flashes yellow-red-red and then lights up white, the current DEK has been deleted by this process. To create a new DEK, perform this procedure with the connection to the host system.

If the main button flashes yellow briefly and then lights up white, the creation of a new DEK is complete. In this case, the storage device is formatted after the next authentication. The main button flashes blue continuously and then lights up green or violet depending on the write-protection status. All other keys are hidden. Access to the VS storage device is enabled. The files that were previously on the VS storage device are no longer visible.

Possible error:
The main button flashes red once after entering the user PIN and then lights up permanently white: The admin PIN was entered incorrectly. The main button flashes red depending on the number of incorrect attempts. The VS storage device then switches to waiting mode.

Change timeout mode settings: press main + 8 + ✓

The main button flashes purple while all other buttons are active. Enter the Admin PIN and confirm with "✓". The main button flashes green continuously and all other buttons are active. Now enter a number from 1 to 30 and confirm with "✓". The main button now flashes green once and the VS storage device switches to waiting mode. The timeout settings have been changed.

Possible error:
The main button flashes red after entering the Admin PIN and then lights up permanently white: The Admin PIN was entered incorrectly. The main button flashes red depending on the number of incorrect attempts. The VS storage device then switches to waiting mode. The VS storage device has changed to waiting mode because the Admin PIN was entered incorrectly. The main button flashes red depending on the number of failed attempts.

The administrator can specify after how many minutes the unlocked Kobra VS storage device locks itself automatically if there is no read or write access to the Kobra VS storage device within the specified time. The selection for the lock is between 1 and 30 minutes. To cancel the lock, select '0'.

Change Admin-PIN: press main button + 9 + ✓

The main button flashes purple while all other buttons light up white. Enter the current Admin PIN and confirm with "√". Enter the new Admin PIN and confirm with "√". Repeat the new Admin PIN and confirm with "√". The main button flashes green twice and the VS storage device switches to waiting mode after the Admin PIN has been changed successfully.

Possible error:
The main button flashes red after the current Admin PIN has been entered: The current Admin PIN was entered incorrectly. The VS storage device switches to waiting mode.

Possible error:
The main button flashes red after entering the Admin PIN and then lights up permanently white: The Admin PIN was entered incorrectly. The main button flashes red depending on the number of incorrect attempts. The VS storage device then switches to waiting mode.

Clear smart card table: press main key + 0

The main button lights up red. Now press the "✓" key. The main button flashes purple and all other buttons are active. Enter the Admin PIN and confirm with "✓". The main button flashes green once, red once and then lights up white. The VS storage device has switched to waiting mode. The smartcard table has been deleted.

Possible error:
The main button flashes red after entering the Admin PIN and then lights up permanently white: The Admin PIN was entered incorrectly. The main button flashes red depending on the number of incorrect attempts. The VS storage device then switches to waiting mode.

User-PIN reactions

The main button flashes red once, all other buttons are hidden and the VS storage device switches to waiting mode

Possibility 1:
There is no DEK key. This should be generated after connecting the VS storage device to a computer (main key +7+✓+user PIN+✓). This reaction can occur if both the DEK has been deleted without connection to a host system and has not yet been generated and a new smartcard table with several new smartcards has been created and the automatic DEK generation process has been interrupted in the process.

Possibility 2:
The user PIN was entered incorrectly. The main button flashes red after each incorrect entry of the user PIN according to the number of incorrect attempts. The VS storage device switches to waiting mode.

The main button flashes yellow-red-yellow-red and the VS storage device changes to waiting mode

The User PIN is locked because it has been entered incorrectly too many times.

The main button lights up green and all other buttons are hidden

The user PIN entry was successful. The main button lights up green while the user PIN is being entered, other buttons are active and switch off briefly each time they are pressed as confirmation that the entry has been recorded. Write protection is not active. Data can be read, written and deleted.

After the VS storage device has been connected to the host system for the first time, the main key starts to flash blue. This means that the VS storage device is being formatted. After a few seconds, the main button lights up green again and you can use the VS storage device on the host system.

The main button lights up purple and all other buttons are hidden

The user PIN entry was successful. The main button lights up green while the user PIN is being entered, other buttons are active and switch off briefly each time they are pressed as confirmation that the entry has been recorded. Write protection is active. Data on the VS storage device can be read, but neither deleted nor edited.

After the VS storage device has been connected to the host system for the first time, the main button starts to flash blue. This means that the VS storage device is being formatted. After a few seconds, the main button lights up purple again and you can use the VS storage device on the host system. Please note, however, that it is not possible to copy or move data from the host system to the VS storage device. It is also not possible to edit data on the VS storage device.

The main button flashes blue and all other buttons are hidden

The VS storage device formats itself automatically. This process takes place after the creation of a new DEK, creation of a new smartcard table or after the initial connection to the host system. Formatting also takes place if write protection was previously activated.

The main button lights up purple and all other buttons are hidden

Lockout mode is deactivated.
Write-protect mode is active.
Provided the VS storage device is connected to the host system, the data on the VS storage device can still be read.

The VS storage device is not connected to the host system via USB.

Removing the smartcard

Lockout mode is deactivated.

Provided the VS storage device is connected to the host system, the data on the VS storage device can still be read.

The main button flashes red and all other keys are hidden

The lockout mode is activated and the VS storage device is locked. Access to the data is no longer possible.

The VS storage device is in waiting mode.
The lockout mode is activated and the VS storage device is thus locked.
Access to the data is no longer possible.
The VS storage device is not connected to the host system via USB.

Behaviour during inactivity

The main button starts to light up white and all other buttons are hidden

The VS storage device has switched to waiting mode.
The timeout mode is activated and set to a certain time.
Access to the data is no longer possible.
A new login with the user PIN is required to access the data again.

The main button is permanently lit in violet and all other buttons are hidden

No timeout function is set.
Write-protect mode is active.
Data can be read, but neither deleted nor edited.

The main button is permanently lit in green and all other buttons are hidden

No timeout function is set.
Write-protect mode is inactive.
Data can be read, written and deleted.
